Circumcisions

Procedure Description:
The foreskin is removed under sterile conditions.

What To Expect:

Typically, circumcisions are done in the hospital during the newborn period; It is done if the child is doing well and after he has urinated.

Circumcisions can be done in the office if you decide not to have it done in the hospital. We perform them up to approximately a month of age.

Please inform us if you have a family history of bleeding disorders (such as hemophilia).

The actual procedure takes about 20 minutes. A consent form explaining the risks and benefits will ge given to you to sign before the procedure.

The decision to have a circumcision is completely up to the parents; it is not medically required.

Preprocedure:

  • The boy is strapped onto a small board securing his hands and feet and placed under a warmer and light.

  • The area is cleaned and a sterile field is created.

  • A small amount of lidocaine is placed on each side of the base of the penis in an effort to eliminate the sensation of pain.

  • A nipple - dipped into simple syrup - is given to the child during the procedure to promote the release of natural pain killers within the body.

  • Sterile equipment is used.
  • We do not use any sutures or cautery during the procedure.

Postprocedure:

If the circumcision is done in the hospital, your nurse will check the baby about half an hour afterward and provide detailed instructions on post-circumcision care.

Likewise, if done at the office you will be asked to wait approximately 30-45 minutes afterward to ensure no complications.

At home:

  • Apply a generous amount of vasoline with a gauze pad on top of the penis with each diaper change.

  • Reapply vasoline as needed and change the gauze pad if soiled.

  • Expect to see a thin yellowish film on top of the penis, along with some swelling - this is part of the normal healing process. It is not necessary to wipe this film off.

  • If the gauze pad seems to stick to the penis, apply some warm water and gently peel it off.

  • Use a warm wet towel to clean the penis only if there is feces on it, otherwise simply reapply vasoline.

  • Continue care for about 5 days after the circumcision.

  • If there is a small amount of bleeding, contact us immediately.

Swine Flu Update

First time patients

Expectant Moms

Please feel free to call ahead to schedule a complimentary meet and greet with either or both of our physicians.

"How will the hospital know that you are my pediatrician?"

You can state who your pediatrician will be at the time you register with the hospital (most hospitals allow you to do this ahead of time on their websites). Or, at the time you are admitted to the hospital you will be asked whom your pediatrician will be and you can designate any one of the three doctors: Drs. Patel, DeLucca, or Horlick

Newborn visits by our physicians

One of the three physician will be going to see the newborns born at either Scottsdale Shea or at Paradise Valley Hospital every day. You can expect to see them every day that you are in the hospital, usually sometime between 6:00am and 9:00am each morning.

"How will you know that my baby was born?"

Soon after your child is born the hospital will notify the office directly. When the office is closed, our answering service will take the message and if no call back is needed by the hospital then our doctors will be notified early the subsequent morning.

Calling during Nighttime, Weekends, Holidays

For any life-threatening emergencies call 911.

After the office has closed, either Dr. DeLucca or Dr. Patel is on call for emergencies or urgent situations that cannot wait until the morning. Calls about mild illnesses can usually wait until the morning. Please do not call with questions regarding scheduling, prescription refills, or referrals as those questions are best answered when the office is open.

If you have an urgent medical problem that cannot wait until the next day, call our answering service at:

(602) 776-3598

This number is also on our recording if you call the office after hours. The operator will page the either Drs. DeLucca or Patel who will then return your call as soon as possible. They will be able to offer home care advice or authorize an emergency room visit if it's needed.

Many insurance companies require you to contact your primary care provider before you go to an emergency room. They may also have specific hospitals you can use. Please be familiar with the regulations of your insurance company.

Which hospitals do we have priviledges with?

Drs. Patel,DeLucca, and Horlick have admitting and staff privileges at the following hospitals:

  1. 1919 E. Thomas Road
    Phoenix, AZ 85016
    (602) 546-1000
Although we do admit to PCH we do not round/see patients there; another doctor from a Hospitalist service will see you daily.

  2. 3929 East Bell Road
    Phoenix, Arizona 85032
    (602) 923-5000

  3. 9003 E Shea Blvd
    Scottsdale, AZ 85260
    (480) 323-3000

We will see newborns and sick children ourselves at Paradise Valley Hospital and Scottsdale Shea. Patients requiring specialized care will be admitted to either Phoenix Children's or St. Joe's. However, we do not routinely round on those patients; care will be transferred over to another physician.

Our practice philosophy is that we will offer a same-day appointment for all sick children. We will not turn away any child who needs care. You may call the office to schedule an appointment after 8:00 a.m. Monday through Saturday until the office closes for the day (5pm weekdays and noon on Saturdays). Call our office as early in the day as possible to schedule an appointment. Please feel free to request either Dr. Patel or DeLucca - we will try to accomodate your request.
